Lois Tarkanian Dies at 89, Leaves Lasting Legacy
Dr. Lois Tarkanian, a prominent figure in education, politics, and community service, has passed away at the age of 89. Known for her extensive career in Southern Nevada, she served 14 years on the Las Vegas City Council and was involved with the Clark County School Board for 12 years, as well as being elected to the Nevada System of Higher Education's Board of Regents in 2020. Tarkanian was a trailblazer in inclusive education, founding California's first private day school for deaf children and co-founding The Public Education Foundation. Her contributions earned her numerous accolades and left a lasting impact on education and community development in Nevada. Tarkanian was also the widow of Jerry Tarkanian, a legendary UNLV basketball coach, and is survived by her four children. Her legacy continues to be celebrated by family, friends, and the institutions she helped shape.
