Germany Arrests Syrian Suspected of Planning Berlin Jihadist Attack

German authorities have arrested a 22-year-old Syrian man in Berlin on suspicion of preparing a jihadist attack targeting the capital. The suspect was taken into custody in the Neukölln district and is charged with preparing serious violence against the state and spreading propaganda material linked to terrorist organizations, including the Islamic State. Searches of three residences connected to the suspect uncovered materials potentially usable for building explosives. German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt emphasized the ongoing heightened terrorist threat in Germany, noting the suspect had been in the country since 2023 and that the plot was detected in time. Berlin remains under vigilant security watch following previous attacks, including the deadly 2016 Christmas market truck attack that killed 12 people. Recent months have also seen multiple knife attacks and incidents motivated by both jihadist and far-right extremism, contributing to a focus on security measures.
