Indian weightlifter Mirabai Chanu narrowly missed out on winning a second consecutive Olympic medal, finishing fourth in the women's 49kg event at the Paris Olympics. Chanu lifted a total of 199kg, just 1kg short of Thailand’s Surodchana Khambao who won bronze. Despite her strong performance, Chanu was unable to successfully complete her final clean and jerk attempt of 114kg, which would have secured her a medal. China's Hou Zhihui won gold by setting an Olympic record with a lift of 206kg, followed by Romania's Mihaela Cambei with silver at 205kg. Chanu’s near-miss adds to India's series of close finishes at these games, eliciting both sympathy and praise from her supporters.
