The WNBA has announced that Portland will receive an expansion franchise set to begin play in 2026, bringing the league's total to 15 teams. The franchise, owned by RAJ Sports and led by Lisa Bhathal Merage and Alex Bhathal, comes after a $125 million investment and reflects the league's ongoing expansion efforts, which also include new teams in the California Bay Area and Toronto. WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert emphasized the significance of Portland's passionate basketball community and its historical role in women's sports. The 2026 season is anticipated to coincide with a new financial structure due to a recent $2.2 billion media rights deal, prompting changes in player contracts and salary caps. The Bhathal family aims to establish a strong connection with the local community and promote women's sports in the region. Previously, Portland had a WNBA team, the Fire, which ceased operations in 2002.
