Michigan Church Shooter's Fundraiser Sparks Outrage
A gunman identified as Thomas “Jake” Sanford attacked a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints chapel in Grand Blanc Township, Michigan, killing four people, injuring eight and setting the building on fire before being shot dead by police. Utah resident Dave Butler launched a GiveSendGo fundraiser for Sanford’s widow and children with an initial $10,000 goal that rapidly grew into the hundreds of thousands—reported between roughly $300,000 and $347,000—after promotion through podcasts and faith‑community networks. Supporters framed contributions as acts of Christian forgiveness and compassion and cited specific needs such as a young son’s medical issues. The fundraiser drew sharp criticism and national debate because donations for the shooter’s family in some cases outpaced funds raised for victims, prompting outrage and confusion. Separate GoFundMe pages for victims and their families, including a campaign for victim Thelma Armstrong that surpassed about $59,200, have also been established to cover funerals and medical needs. Authorities describe the incident as targeted violence and are continuing to investigate Sanford’s motive, with some reports noting prior resentment toward the faith.
