Alaska Hit by Major Quake, Aftershocks, No Injuries
A magnitude 7.3 earthquake struck off the southern coast of Alaska near Sand Point on July 16, 2025, triggering tsunami warnings and widespread evacuations across a 700-mile coastline. The quake was followed by more than 40 aftershocks, some as strong as magnitude 5.7, but no major structural damage or injuries were reported. Tsunami warnings were quickly downgraded after only minor water level changes were observed. This marks the fifth major earthquake in the region since 2020, highlighting ongoing geological unrest along the Aleutian subduction zone. Seismologists warn that further large quakes or aftershocks may occur in the coming months. Alaska's emergency response and public preparedness enabled rapid, orderly evacuations and limited consequences.
