A federal judge has reduced the charges against two former Louisville Metro Police officers, Joshua Jaynes and Kyle Meany, involved in the fatal shooting of Breonna Taylor during a botched raid in 2020. Senior Judge Charles Simpson III dismissed the felony charges related to deprivation of rights under color of law, originally carrying potential life sentences, ruling that the warrantless entry was not the direct cause of Taylor's death. Instead, he stated that her boyfriend, Kenneth Walker, firing in self-defense after believing intruders were breaking in was the legal cause of her death. The officers will now face a misdemeanor charge, which carries a maximum penalty of one year in prison. This decision comes amid ongoing discussions about police reform and accountability following Taylor's death, which became a pivotal issue for the Black Lives Matter movement. The judge acknowledged the tragedy of Taylor's death but emphasized that defining a crime is the role of the legislature, not the judiciary.
