Gary Payton Named Head Coach at Alameda College

Former NBA star Gary Payton Sr. has been named the new head coach of the College of Alameda men's basketball team, succeeding his prior role at Lincoln University. Athletic director Remaundo Vaughn praised Payton's leadership qualities and community focus, emphasizing the significant impact he can have on student-athletes. Payton, an Oakland native and Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Famer, takes over a struggling program that finished the last season with a 7-21 record. His coaching experience includes leading the Bivouac to a title in the Big 3 league, where he was recognized as coach of the year. Payton's extensive NBA career included a championship with the Miami Heat and a reputation for exceptional defensive skills. His son, Gary Payton II, currently plays for the Golden State Warriors, highlighting the family's deep ties to basketball.
