World’s Oldest Marathon Runner Fauja Singh Dies in Road Accident India
Fauja Singh, widely believed to be the world's oldest marathon runner, has died at the age of 114 after being hit by a car while crossing the road in his birth village of Beas Pind, Punjab, India. Singh, who began running marathons at the age of 89 and continued competitively until 101, was an inspirational figure known as the 'Turbaned Tornado' and held multiple world age-group records. His London-based running club and charity, Sikhs In The City, confirmed his death and announced that upcoming events would be dedicated to celebrating his life and achievements, while also raising funds to build a clubhouse in his name in Ilford, where he trained. Despite being unable to walk until he was five due to thin and weak legs, Singh overcame adversity, running marathons across the globe, including London, New York, Toronto, and Mumbai, and receiving honors such as a personal letter from Queen Elizabeth II and recognition by Guinness World Records. He took up running seriously after moving to England in the 1990s as a way to cope with personal loss, notably completing the London Marathon at age 90 with a time that shattered previous records for his age group. His legacy is celebrated for encouraging fitness and positivity worldwide.
