Concerns Rise as 1,131 Apply for Silvertown, Blackwall Tunnel Discounts

Concerns are mounting as only 1,131 individuals, businesses, and charities have applied for discounts to use the soon-to-open Silvertown Tunnel and the neighbouring Blackwall Tunnel, according to data from City Hall. Low-income Londoners are eligible for a 50% discount, while small businesses and charities can receive a £1 discount during off-peak hours. As of February 17, only 904 residents and 227 businesses had registered for these discounts since the application window opened on January 27. Hina Bokhari, a London Assembly leader, expressed worry over the low participation and emphasized the need for greater awareness about the discounts. The Silvertown Tunnel is set to open on April 7, with charges applying to both tunnels from that date. Critics argue that the Mayor's lack of transparency has hindered public knowledge about the tolls and discounts, potentially impacting usage rates.
