Canada awards $6.4B contracts for polar icebreakers in Quebec, B.C.
The Canadian government has awarded a $3.25 billion contract to Chantier Davie in Lévis for the construction of a polar icebreaker, expected to be delivered by 2030. This investment is part of a broader fleet renewal plan by the Canadian Coast Guard and Royal Canadian Navy, with another icebreaker being built at Seaspan's Vancouver Shipyard for $3.15 billion. Federal Minister Jean-Yves Duclos emphasized that these ships will enhance Canada's Arctic sovereignty and are crucial for year-round operations in northern waters. The projects are anticipated to create approximately 3,250 direct and indirect jobs annually and add $440 million to Canada's GDP. Quebec Premier François Legault highlighted the importance of these jobs amidst potential economic risks from U.S. tariffs. Both icebreakers will incorporate advanced capabilities to support scientific research and respond to maritime emergencies effectively.
