The UK Government has reached a £630 million deal to purchase the Electricity System Operator (ESO) from National Grid, marking a significant shift towards public ownership. This transaction is set to close on October 1, 2024, and will facilitate the establishment of the new National Energy System Operator (NESO), which aims to enhance the UK's energy security and support the transition to net zero. Energy Secretary Ed Miliband emphasized the importance of NESO in creating a clean energy superpower and reducing reliance on fossil fuels. NESO will merge the planning of electricity and gas networks, expanding its responsibilities to include resilience and market development. The sale follows the Energy Act passed in October 2023, which paves the way for the ESO's transformation into a public body. Paul Golby, former E.ON chief executive, will chair the new organization, which is expected to play a crucial role in managing the UK's energy future.
