Morocco Seals MAD 38 Billion Airport Expansion Agreement
Morocco is undertaking a major $4.2 billion investment plan to expand and modernize its airport infrastructure in preparation for co-hosting the 2030 FIFA World Cup alongside Spain and Portugal. The plan aims to more than double the country's annual airport capacity from 38 million to 80 million passengers by 2030, focusing on constructing a new international airport terminal and runway at Casablanca’s Mohammed V International Airport, as well as expanding airports in Marrakech, Agadir, Tangier, and Fez. This expansion is part of the broader “Airport 2030” strategy, which also allocates funds for maintenance, modernization, and land acquisition to ensure a modern, resilient, and sustainable airport network. The project is expected to support Morocco’s growing tourism sector, which aims to attract 26 million visitors annually by 2030, and strengthen the country's position as a regional air travel hub. The agreement, signed by the government and the Moroccan Airports Authority (ONDA) and chaired by Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch, reflects the country’s commitment to leveraging World Cup infrastructure to drive economic growth, territorial integration, and social inclusion. Additionally, the upgrades will help meet FIFA’s logistical requirements and boost the development of several economic sectors, particularly tourism.
