Colorado Wildlife Monitors New Wolf Packs, Pups in Rockies

Colorado's wolf reintroduction program is progressing with the establishment of three new wolf packs: the King Mountain Pack in Routt County, the One Ear Pack in Jackson County, and the Three Creeks Pack in Rio Blanco County. Video footage captured by trail cameras shows at least four wolf pups from the King Mountain Pack, born in mid-April 2025, now approximately 10 to 12 weeks old and beginning to explore outside their dens. Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) actively monitors these packs and dens, although accurate pup counts remain challenging due to the wolves' elusive behavior. The program emphasizes conflict minimization strategies such as range riding and carcass removal to mitigate wolf-livestock interactions, with ongoing collaboration between wildlife officials and producers. Despite setbacks including five wolf mortalities this year, CPW remains committed to expanding the wolf population and managing territories to foster coexistence between wolves and humans. Overall, the reintroduction effort reflects both ecological recovery and coordinated management efforts in the Rocky Mountain region.
