David Mark Baker, a pastor and former mayoral candidate in Maury County, Tennessee, died by suicide on Wednesday shortly after being released on bond following his arrest for aggravated sexual battery. Baker, who was affiliated with Family Baptist Church and Independent Baptist College Online, shot himself at Maury Regional Hospital. Separately, Jeffrey Duane Smith, a longtime pastor at Mebane Presbyterian Church in Alamance County, was arrested for misdemeanor sexual battery after allegedly groping a man in a Walmart restroom. Smith was apprehended after fleeing the scene and later released on a $3,000 bond. Both incidents have sent shockwaves through their respective communities.
