Japan Plans Automated Cargo Corridor by 2030
Japan is set to develop an automated cargo transport corridor between Tokyo and Osaka, referred to as the 'conveyor belt road', in response to a significant shortage of truck drivers. The project aims to introduce a 24-hour unmanned transportation system that utilizes dedicated lanes for logistics, with trial runs scheduled for 2027 and full operations anticipated by the mid-2030s. Senior Deputy Director Yuri Endo from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport, and Tourism highlighted that this initiative not only addresses labor shortages but also aims to reduce carbon emissions. The automated system will feature large wheeled boxes, measuring approximately six feet high and 3.6 feet wide, which will be loaded using automated forklifts in coordination with ports and airports. Similar automated transport concepts are being explored in Switzerland and London, indicating a growing global interest in such innovations. If successful, Japan may expand this system to additional routes nationwide, albeit human drivers will likely still be needed for last-mile deliveries.
