This decision comes despite being named in the squad for the first Test against South Africa, originally planned as his farewell match. Shakib, a former Member of Parliament for the Awami League, has been advised by government and sports officials to stay away to avoid escalating tensions. His decision is influenced by the political unrest leading to the ousting of the Awami League government, amid which Shakib was implicated in a police crackdown-related murder case. Although initially selected by the Bangladesh Cricket Board, public protests and safety concerns have led to reconsideration. Despite this, Shakib has expressed a desire to retire in front of his home crowd, issuing an apology for his silence during the political upheaval.
