Lava has returned to the Napau Crater in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park for the first time in nearly 30 years, marking the continuation of Kilauea's latest eruption. This eruption began with fissures opening just west of the crater on Sunday evening, and lava fountains reaching heights of up to 30 feet were observed by Tuesday morning. Ken Hon from the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory indicated that this eruption could be brief, similar to the last event in 1997, and the current activity appears confined to the crater area. In response to increased seismic activity, officials closed access to the Chain of Craters Road to ensure public safety. The Volcano Alert Level has been raised to 'WATCH' and an Aviation Color Code of 'ORANGE' has been issued, although there is no immediate threat to life or infrastructure. Residents may experience fluctuating volcanic gas emissions as the eruption continues.
