Labour-Run Hampshire Council Withdraws Christian Street Preaching Injunction

Rushmoor Borough Council in Hampshire has withdrawn its attempt to impose a court injunction that would have banned Christian street preaching, prayer, singing, and distribution of religious literature in the town centers of Aldershot and Farnborough. The council initially sought the injunction to address complaints about anti-social behavior and public alarm, but faced strong opposition from local Christian groups, faith leaders, Conservative councillors, and the Christian Legal Centre, who argued the restrictions were overly broad and infringed on religious freedom and free speech. The proposed injunction included criminal penalties of up to two years in prison and would have restricted praying for people without prior permission, handing out leaflets, and engaging in religious discussions, potentially criminalizing common practices like carol singing. After a meeting on April 23 with faith leaders and council officials, the council acknowledged concerns about the injunction's scope and agreed to pause and ultimately withdraw the application, committing instead to work on a voluntary code of conduct and consider complaints on a case-by-case basis. Local preachers emphasized the positive social impact of their outreach, especially among vulnerable groups, and criticized the council for failing to consult them prior to the injunction proposal. The council maintains it seeks a fair balance between community rights but will pursue targeted action if necessary while continuing dialogue with local Christian representatives.
