Port of Rotterdam Launches Electric Hydrofoil Patrol Vessel Pilot
The Port of Rotterdam Authority has launched a pilot project featuring the Artemis EF-12 Workboat, a fully electric hydrofoil patrol vessel named RPA ZERO, to evaluate its potential in decarbonizing port operations and renewing the fleet. This vessel, leased from Belfast-based Artemis Technologies, is the world's first 100% electric foiling commercial workboat designed to operate 24/7 with minimal environmental impact, including reduced wave action and exceptional stability in rough waters. The pilot program, running until November 2025, will assess the vessel’s sailing behavior, reliability, electric power use, charging needs, and suitability for the Harbour Master’s Division’s enforcement and monitoring tasks. The initiative aligns with the Port of Rotterdam's goals to become the smartest and most sustainable port by integrating modern, emission-free technologies while maintaining rapid response capabilities. Artemis Technologies CEO Dr. Iain Percy highlighted the collaboration as a significant step toward meeting ambitious sustainability targets without compromising safety and efficiency. This project complements the port's broader adoption of battery-powered and hydrogen fuel solutions, such as robotic charging for automated terminal trucks, underscoring its commitment to emission reduction across operations.
