Singapore Population Reaches 6.11 Million Driven by Non-Resident Growth

Singapore's total population reached a new high of 6.11 million as of June 2025, marking a 1.2% increase from the previous year, primarily driven by growth in the non-resident population, which rose 2.7% to 1.91 million. This non-resident group includes foreign workers, migrant domestic workers, dependents, and international students, with the main contributors being Work Permit Holders in sectors like construction, marine shipyards, and processing. Singapore's resident population, consisting of citizens and permanent residents (PRs), grew modestly from 4.18 million to 4.20 million, with the citizen population increasing by 0.7% to 3.66 million and PR numbers remaining stable at around 540,000. Despite the rise in citizenship grants and PRs, concerns remain about the dilution of national identity and the challenges of integration for newcomers. The citizen population is also aging, with a notable increase in those aged 65 and above, and a decline in the working-age group proportion. Singapore's population growth supports major infrastructure projects such as Changi Airport Terminal 5 and housing development, reflecting a careful but strategic approach to immigration and population management.
