Greenland to Open New Airport in Nuuk

Greenland is set to open its first international airport in Nuuk on November 28, 2024, allowing larger aircraft to land and facilitating direct flights from the US and Europe for the first time. This development is part of a broader initiative that includes two additional airports planned for Ilulissat and Qaqortoq by 2026, aimed at boosting the local economy and making the Arctic territory more accessible. Initially, the airport will offer five weekly flights from Nuuk to Copenhagen, with plans to increase frequency during peak seasons. The new airport replaces the need for travelers to transfer at Kangerlussuaq, enhancing logistical convenience for visitors. Jens Lauridsen, CEO of Greenland Airports, anticipates significant tourism growth as a result of these changes. Construction delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic have pushed the opening to late 2024, but the new facilities are expected to transform travel to Greenland.
