EU, France Support Review of Israel Association Agreement Over Gaza Crisis

The European Union, led by the Netherlands, is considering a review of the EU-Israel Association Agreement in response to Israel's military actions in Gaza and restrictions on humanitarian aid. France, supported by other EU members and allies like the UK and Canada, has backed this initiative, emphasizing that Israel's limited allowance of aid is insufficient and that Israel may be violating Article 2 of the agreement, which requires respect for human rights and democratic principles. EU Foreign Affairs Council members, including Kaja Kallas, stressed the urgent need for humanitarian aid to reach Gaza amid a severe crisis exacerbated by Israeli border closures since March. The review could lead to a suspension of the agreement, affecting political and economic ties between the EU and Israel. Meanwhile, Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu strongly rejected the criticism, framing the conflict as a defense against barbarism and dismissing calls to halt military operations. Additionally, the EU appointed Christophe Bigot as the new Special Representative for the Middle East peace process, aiming to support a two-state solution and lasting peace in the region.
