K J Rao, a 59-year-old executive in Bengaluru, fell victim to an elaborate cyber fraud orchestrated by scammers who staged a fake online courtroom trial, resulting in a loss of Rs 59 lakh. The incident began with an automated call threatening to block his mobile number unless he complied. The fraudsters, posing as law enforcement, coerced him into transferring funds by simulating an investigation and a courtroom session via Skype. Rao was kept under surveillance and was misled into believing he was under a 'digital arrest' for money laundering involving his Aadhaar details. After realizing he had been scammed, he filed a complaint, prompting police to investigate and attempt to freeze the stolen funds. The case highlights a concerning trend in cyber fraud, particularly the use of English by the scammers, which is atypical in such crimes in India.
