Cambodia, Thailand Tensions Rise Ahead of Border Talks

Following a deadly border clash on May 28 between Thai and Cambodian troops near the Emerald Triangle, both countries have increased military readiness while publicly pledging to seek a peaceful resolution. Decades-old disputes over undemarcated border areas, especially around the Preah Vihear temple, continue to fuel tensions and nationalist sentiment. Cambodia has proposed referring unresolved disputes to the International Court of Justice (ICJ), but Thailand opposes this and prefers using existing bilateral mechanisms. A Joint Boundary Commission meeting is scheduled for June 14 in Phnom Penh to address recent tensions and continue demarcation efforts. Despite heightened military alertness, leaders from both sides have reiterated their commitment to dialogue and peace.
