Over Two Million Syrians Return Home Amid Fragile Conditions, Warns UN Refugees Chief
Since the fall of Bashar Assad's government in December 2024, over two million Syrian refugees and internally displaced people have returned to Syria, marking a significant shift in the refugee crisis. UNHCR High Commissioner Filippo Grandi described the situation as "fragile and hopeful," but warned that sustainable returns depend on international support to rebuild essential services such as housing, electricity, schools, and healthcare. Despite the political change, challenges remain severe, including ongoing violence, economic instability, and reduced foreign aid, notably with the United States suspending all foreign assistance and European donors cutting back. The Syrian Network for Human Rights highlighted that structural obstacles to return persist, including legal, administrative, security, and economic issues, and emphasized the need for justice, accountability, and international cooperation to ensure safe and dignified returns. Millions of Syrians remain displaced both inside and outside the country, with many refugees cautiously reconsidering their options amid the uncertain security and political environment. The regional instability, including conflicts involving Israel and Iran, further complicates the situation, affecting refugee flows and humanitarian responses.
