The first victim of the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre to be identified from unmarked graves is World War I veteran C.L. Daniel. His remains were identified using DNA from descendants and a 1936 letter found in the National Archives that confirmed his death during the massacre. Mayor GT Bynum announced that this identification allows Daniel's family to give him a proper burial after a century of uncertainty. The identification of Daniel's remains, found at Oaklawn Cemetery, marks a significant breakthrough in the ongoing efforts to uncover and honor the victims of the massacre, which saw a white mob kill up to 300 Black residents and devastate the Greenwood District. Researchers and forensic teams continue to work on identifying more victims from the mass graves discovered. The discovery underscores the importance of genetic genealogy and archival research in historical investigations.
