A 17-year-old girl tragically died after being hit by a car on the M5 motorway in Somerset. The incident occurred around 11 pm on Monday between junctions 24 for Bridgwater and 25 for Taunton. She had been detained by police and was being transported to custody when she exited the police vehicle shortly before the collision. Avon and Somerset Police have informed the girl's next of kin, who are being supported by a specially trained officer. The force has made a mandatory referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct due to prior police contact. The motorway is closed in both directions for the investigation, with traffic being diverted, and delays expected to last until at least midday.
