ECOWAS Establishes Special Tribunal for Gambia
ECOWAS has announced the establishment of a Special Tribunal for The Gambia to prosecute crimes committed during Yahya Jammeh's dictatorship from 1994 to 2017, marking a historic partnership with a member state for such judicial action. This tribunal, a first for ECOWAS, aims to address extensive human rights violations including torture and extrajudicial killings, as documented by The Gambia's Truth, Reconciliation, and Reparations Commission. The tribunal will integrate both domestic and international legal frameworks and operate independently, with the flexibility to hold proceedings in different countries if necessary. This initiative follows mounting international calls for accountability and justice for victims of Jammeh’s regime. President Adama Barrow expressed gratitude to ECOWAS leaders for their support in this significant step toward justice.
