Contreras Misses Third Straight Game With Back Spasms
St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Willson Contreras missed at least three consecutive games against the Arizona Diamondbacks due to ongoing back spasms, after initially being scratched before Friday's series opener. Despite initial optimism that his absence would be brief, Contreras remained out through Sunday's game, with Alec Burleson filling in at first base. The lineup changes resulted in Brendan Donovan moving to left field and Nolan Gorman starting at second base. Manager Oliver Marmol stated that Alec Burleson and Jordan Walker are not being used in a strict platoon, but rather based on performance and matchups. Contreras, who leads the team in appearances this season, is still considered day to day as the team monitors his recovery. The Cardinals also recalled reliever Matt Svanson to bolster the bullpen.
