Labour Peer Lord David Lipsey Dies Swimming River Wye Wales
Lord David Lipsey, a distinguished Labour peer, political adviser, and journalist, died while swimming in the River Wye near Glasbury, Powys. He was 77 years old and had a notable career as an adviser to Prime Minister James Callaghan in the 1970s as well as a senior journalist at The Sunday Times, The Times, and The Economist. Lipsey is credited with coining the phrases "New Labour" and "winter of discontent," terms that have had a lasting impact on British political discourse. Following a report of his safety concerns, a multi-agency search was conducted, and his body was recovered on July 1, 2025. Tributes poured in from Labour Party leader Sir Keir Starmer, the Premier Greyhound Racing organization, and the British Horseracing Authority, underscoring Lipsey's dedication to public service and his support for greyhound racing and the arts. His family has requested privacy during this difficult time.
