Stellantis and CATL to Build Spanish EV Battery Plant

Stellantis and CATL have announced a joint venture to build a €4.1 billion ($4.3 billion) lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery plant in Zaragoza, Spain, set to start production by the end of 2026. The facility aims to achieve an annual capacity of 50 GWh and will be fully carbon-neutral, utilizing Spain's renewable energy resources. This collaboration follows a 2023 memorandum of understanding and aligns with Stellantis' strategy to enhance its electric vehicle offerings and reduce reliance on Asian battery manufacturers. Spain, a significant car producer in Europe, has provided substantial support, including subsidies, to facilitate this project. Stellantis has further partnered with Zeta Energy to develop lithium-sulfur batteries, which promise performance improvements and cost reductions over current technologies. These initiatives underscore Stellantis' commitment to innovation and sustainable manufacturing in the EV sector.
