Padres Force Game 3 With 3-0 Win
The San Diego Padres beat the Chicago Cubs 3-0 on Wednesday to even the NL Wild Card Series and force a decisive Game 3 at Wrigley Field on Thursday. Jackson Merrill opened the scoring with a first-inning sacrifice fly and Manny Machado added a 404-foot, two-run homer in the fifth. Cubs starter Dylan Cease struck out five over 3 2/3 innings and the Cubs managed just four hits. San Diego relievers Adrian Morejon (2 1/3 perfect innings), Mason Miller (struck out five straight and threw a 104.5 mph pitch) and Robert Suarez combined for 5.1 scoreless innings to preserve the shutout. Yu Darvish is lined up to start Game 3 for San Diego in the winner-take-all matchup at Wrigley.
