Colorado Highway 82 Closes for Winter Season

The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) has announced the seasonal closure of Independence Pass due to safety concerns, following a temporary closure on October 28 caused by winter weather and road damage from a rockfall. This closure, which typically lasts until spring, ensures safety for both maintenance operators and travelers, as the steep switchbacks are prone to avalanches. Meanwhile, in Washington State, Chinook and Cayuse passes have also closed early due to heavy snowfall, receiving over 20 inches in recent days, with closures expected to last until next spring. These passes usually close by mid-November but were affected by an early winter storm. Additionally, the Susten Pass in Switzerland is set to close for winter on November 10, joining other Alpine passes like the Pragel and Great St. Bernard, which are already closed for the season. These closures across various regions reflect the increasing winter conditions and associated hazards.
