Iron Age Roman Settlement Uncovered Cotswolds Reveals Extensive Prehistoric Remains
Archaeologists have uncovered a significant Iron Age and Roman settlement near a Cotswolds village in Gloucestershire, prompted by the discovery of two rare Roman cavalry swords during a metal detecting rally. The swords, believed to date from the early second to third century AD, were donated to the Corinium Museum and led to geophysical surveys revealing extensive prehistoric and Romano-British remains, including Iron Age ring ditches and possible Roman limestone villa structures. Excavations suggest continuous settlement spanning several centuries, providing new insights into settlement patterns around the time of the Roman Conquest. Historic England may recommend the site for scheduled monument status due to its historical importance. Meanwhile, in Cardiff's Trelai Park, archaeologists have discovered Bronze Age cremation burials near a previously unearthed 1500 BC roundhouse, indicating complex, multi-generational occupation at the site. These findings highlight the rich prehistoric and Roman heritage across parts of the UK, deepening understanding of ancient community life and settlement development.
