Kitchener man faces charges after hatchet attack on police
A 27-year-old Kitchener man is facing multiple charges after resisting arrest during a dramatic police takedown that was captured on video and went viral. The incident occurred around 5:20 p.m. at the intersection of Strasburg and Block Line roads after the man, identified as a disqualified driver, ran a red light and was involved in a collision. After initially attempting to fight an officer, he returned to his vehicle, retrieved a hatchet, and approached the officer in a threatening manner. The officer first deployed a conducted energy weapon (CEW), which was ineffective, but successfully subdued the man after a second deployment. He has been charged with various offenses, including assaulting a police officer and dangerous operation of a vehicle, and is currently held for a bail hearing. Three occupants of the other vehicle involved in the collision sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
