Psilocybin Therapy Reduces Depression in Healthcare Workers
The Victorian government has launched a $1 million Mental Wellbeing Grant initiative aimed at supporting emergency service workers and volunteers, part of the Emergency Responders Health Program. Life Saving Victoria is set to receive $200,000 for a cultural development initiative, while Volunteer Marine Search and Rescue units will get $180,000 for a mental health strategy. Separately, a study published in JAMA Network Open shows that psilocybin therapy significantly reduces depression symptoms among frontline healthcare workers who experienced trauma during the COVID-19 pandemic, with a notable decrease of 21.33 points in depression scores compared to a placebo group. This trial involved 30 participants and highlights psilocybin's potential as a treatment for depression, burnout, and PTSD in this demographic. Researchers noted that the psychological toll of the pandemic on healthcare workers was profound, contributing to widespread mental health challenges. The findings suggest that psilocybin-assisted therapy could be a new paradigm for treating post-pandemic mental health issues.
