Tessa Thompson Stars in DaCosta's 'Hedda'
Nia DaCosta’s Hedda is a bold reimagining of Ibsen’s Hedda Gabler set in 1950s England, with Tessa Thompson starring and the once‑male Lovborg reimagined as Eileen, played by Nina Hoss. The film, which also features Tom Bateman as George Tesman alongside Imogen Poots and Nicholas Pinnock, premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival. It opened in theaters in late October and streamed on Prime Video on Oct. 29. Critics praise DaCosta’s female‑centric update for its costumes, sound design, expanded party setting and its probing of Hedda’s psychological ambiguity and queer past. Much of Hedda was shot at Flintham Hall in Nottinghamshire, and actors noted the physical demands of the escalating all‑night party sequences. Thompson will be honored with a Distinguished Performance Award at this year’s SCAD Savannah Film Festival.
