Indian Man Dies Crossing English Channel

An Indian man, approximately 40 years old, died on Sunday while attempting to cross the English Channel from France to the UK after the boat he was on deflated shortly after departure. The incident occurred off Tardinghen, leading to a total of at least 57 migrant deaths on this route in 2024, marking the deadliest year for such crossings. Although most passengers managed to swim back to shore, emergency services could not revive the man who suffered cardiac arrest. This tragedy is part of a larger surge in attempts to cross the Channel, exacerbated by improved weather conditions and ongoing migration pressures stemming from European asylum rules and rising xenophobia. Since the start of 2024, over 29,000 migrants have successfully crossed the Channel, a figure that has already surpassed the total for all of 2023.
