Jury selection has begun for the federal trial of three former Memphis police officers, Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley, and Justin Smith, charged with violating Tyre Nichols' civil rights and using excessive force that led to his death. Nichols died in January 2023 after being beaten by officers during a traffic stop, with the incident captured on police cameras, sparking nationwide protests. The officers, who have pleaded not guilty, face charges of civil rights violations, conspiracy, and obstruction of justice. Two other former officers, Emmitt Martin III and Desmond Mills Jr., have taken plea deals and may testify. The trial is expected to last three to four weeks, with the jury being selected from a pool of 200 people. Nichols' family, which has filed a separate $550 million lawsuit, is expected to attend the trial.
