Parents Charged After Student Brings Loaded Gun to Cudahy School

The parents of a 12-year-old Cudahy student who brought a loaded handgun to Lincoln Elementary School have been charged with misdemeanors for leaving a loaded firearm near a child. The student admitted to finding the gun in a nightstand drawer in his parents' bedroom and brought it to school twice, as well as to a park, before forgetting it was in his backpack. The student faces multiple charges including possession of a firearm on school grounds and pointing a firearm at another child, and remains in juvenile custody due to a previous incident involving the gun. The parents, Nan Bin Li and Xiaoping Wang, face fines and possible jail time, with the mother's case recently dismissed without prejudice, allowing for possible refiling. Authorities found no gun locks in the nightstand where the gun was stored, but two additional firearms were secured in a gun safe at the family's home. The quick response of the student who alerted school staff, as well as the principal and resource officer, was commended by police.
