IOC Plans New Rules to Protect Female Category After Imane Khelif Controversy
Imane Khelif, the Algerian boxer who won gold in the women's 66kg category at the 2024 Paris Olympics, has faced significant controversy over her gender eligibility after failing a gender test prior to the 2023 World Championships, although she was still allowed to compete in the Olympics. New International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Kirsty Coventry announced plans to protect the female category by forming a working group to create policies that will ban transgender athletes and those with differences of sexual development from competing in women's sports, emphasizing a scientific and medical approach. Despite calls from the International Boxing Association president to strip Khelif of her medal, Coventry confirmed that no retrospective action will be taken against past results, allowing Khelif to retain her title. World Boxing now requires athletes over 18 to undergo a genetic PCR test to confirm sex at birth for eligibility in women’s categories starting with the 2028 Olympics, with a detailed appeals process in place. Khelif responded to the developments with a defiant message on Instagram quoting Winston Churchill, underscoring her resilience amid ongoing scrutiny and new eligibility rules. The controversy highlights the broader debate over fairness and inclusion in women’s sports, with the IOC aiming to lead global efforts to balance these concerns.
