German Army Plans 8,000 Drone Expansion, $9B Skyranger Air Defense
Germany is undertaking a major expansion and modernization of its unmanned aerial systems (UAS) and air defense capabilities, aiming to field around 8,300 drone systems by 2029 and significantly boost its short-range air defense. The Bundeswehr plans to grow its drone inventory from just over 600 to more than 8,000 units, covering platforms from nano-drones for close reconnaissance to loitering munitions for precision strikes, making it one of Europe's largest and most technologically advanced fleets. Alongside this, Germany is set to acquire between 500 and 600 Rheinmetall Skyranger 30 self-propelled air-defense systems, designed to counter drones, cruise missiles, and low-flying aircraft, in a contract potentially worth €6 to €8 billion to be delivered through 2035. The Skyranger 30, mounted on Boxer armored vehicles and equipped with advanced radar and armaments, represents a revival of Germany's short-range air defense capabilities, which had been reduced after the Cold War with the retirement of Gepard anti-aircraft guns. This comprehensive buildup aligns with Germany's commitment to increase defense spending to 3.5% of GDP by 2029 and reflects a strategic shift to address emerging threats from unmanned aerial and loitering munitions seen in recent conflicts. Collectively, these efforts signal Germany's intent to maintain technological edge and operational readiness in dynamic and contested environments.
