Kentucky Youth Advocates Release 2024 Kids Count Data

The 2024 Kentucky KIDS COUNT Data Book released by Kentucky Youth Advocates reveals improvements in 11 out of 16 indicators related to child well-being, including economic security, education, and health. However, significant challenges remain, with one in five children in Kentucky living in poverty and facing food insecurity. The report highlights that nearly one in four children have experienced adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), which can lead to long-term health issues and risky behaviors. Disparities persist, as Black and Latinx children are disproportionately affected by poverty and food insecurity compared to their white peers. The data also indicates a decline in health insurance coverage for children in certain regions of Kentucky, despite a statewide average of 96%. KYA advocates for legislative measures to address these issues, including a refundable earned income tax credit to support low-income families.
