Spanish Police Seize Record 13 Tons of Cocaine

Spanish police have seized a record 13 tons of cocaine, marking the largest haul in the country's history and the second largest in the European Union. The seizure occurred on October 14 at the southern port of Algeciras, where the drugs were hidden in crates of bananas shipped from Ecuador, linked to a known drug trafficking exporter. Authorities arrested one individual, believed to be associated with the importing company, while two others are currently at large. The cocaine is suspected to have been destined for distribution beyond Spain, as the local market could not absorb such a large quantity. This operation follows a previous record seizure in August 2023, where 9.4 tons of cocaine were found in a similar shipment. Spain's strategic position as a gateway for drugs entering Europe has led to a series of significant drug busts in recent years.
