Rex Heuermann To Face Single Trial for Seven Murders

State Supreme Court Justice Timothy Mazzei ruled that Rex Heuermann will face a single trial on all seven Gilgo Beach murder charges, denying defense requests to split the cases. Mazzei also allowed advanced DNA evidence described as whole‑genome (nuclear) DNA developed by an outside lab, rejecting the defense’s challenge that the lab lacked a New York permit. Heuermann, arrested in July 2023 and pleading not guilty, is accused of killings spanning 1993–2010 whose remains were found along Long Island’s south shore; prosecutors cited overlapping evidence, an alleged planning document seized at his home, and a purported common modus operandi to justify a single trial. Defense attorneys argued the cases involve different time frames, methods and sites and would risk unfair cumulative prejudice if tried together. Mazzei set a Jan. 13, 2026 deadline for additional pretrial motions and has not scheduled a trial date.
