RIBA Report Reveals Pervasive Sexism Hindering Women Architects in UK
A 2025 report by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) and the Fawcett Society reveals persistent gender inequality in UK architecture, mirroring issues identified two decades ago. The study, involving over 600 women architects, found that 83% believe motherhood has negatively impacted their careers, a rate more than double the national average. Women face widespread challenges including sexual harassment, bullying, unequal pay, and an entrenched workplace culture that glorifies long hours and exclusionary networking, often described as an "old boys' club." Despite these systemic problems, only a minority of harassment reports receive satisfactory responses, highlighting deficiencies in policies and HR structures. The report includes 47 recommendations aimed at fostering equity, with RIBA pledging to implement practical steps such as comprehensive employee policies, support for maternity leave, and flexible working arrangements. However, the fundamental issue remains a lack of institutional will to prioritize and invest in meaningful cultural and structural change across the profession.
