Energy Crisis Deepens in Transnistria Region

The energy crisis in Moldova's breakaway region of Transnistria has worsened, with residents facing severe disruptions in electricity, heating, and water supplies since Russia halted gas deliveries on January 1, 2025. Prime Minister Dorin Recean reported that many individuals are struggling with basic needs due to rolling blackouts and a lack of gas, while Moldovan officials accused Russia of using the crisis as a manipulation tactic to create discontent. The region is currently experiencing a 30% electricity shortage, risking a complete power system failure due to excessive demand and outdated infrastructure. The Moldovan government has proposed alternative gas solutions to the Transnistrian authorities, but they have refused to cooperate. Amidst rising tensions, Moldova summoned a Russian diplomat following accusations regarding the worsening situation, with both sides trading blame over the crisis. Russian officials, however, attributed the issue mainly to Moldova's financial disputes, exacerbated by Ukraine terminating its gas transit contract.
