Iowa K-9 disarms shotgun-wielding man during welfare check

In Decorah, Iowa, a K-9 named Drago was credited with disarming Jordan Schaller, a 29-year-old man who threatened deputies with a 20-gauge shotgun during a welfare check. After Schaller refused to drop the weapon and fired multiple shots into the ground, Drago bit the shotgun out of his hands and retrieved it, preventing any injuries. Schaller was arrested and charged with several felonies including assault on a peace officer with a firearm, intimidation with a dangerous weapon, assault while participating in a felony, and second-degree harassment. The incident took place at Schaller's parents' home, and court records also note Schaller is awaiting trial for a recent operating while intoxicated charge. Drago has been with the Winneshiek County Sheriff's Office since 2022, and the case remains under investigation with additional charges possible. The swift action of the K-9 effectively ended the dangerous confrontation without harm to law enforcement or others.
