CAS Delays Verdict on Vinesh Phogat Appeal

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has postponed its verdict on Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat's appeal regarding her disqualification from the women's 50kg final at the Paris Olympics to August 16, after initially scheduling it for August 13. Phogat was disqualified for exceeding the weight limit by 100 grams before her gold medal match. Both Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) President Sanjay Singh and Vice-President Jai Prakash Chaudhary expressed optimism for a favorable outcome, emphasizing the significance of the decision for India's medal tally. Singh highlighted that disruptions in the sport over the past 15-16 months have affected performance, stating, 'India could have won six more medals in wrestling.' However, he also noted that athletes bear responsibility for managing their weight effectively. The case is being overseen by an ad hoc division of CAS established in Paris to handle Olympic disputes.
